   A generic term used to describe markets in underlying financial instruments such as currencies, bonds and shares, as opposed to markets in derivative instruments such as futures, options and swaps. The term is also widely used in foreign exchange and debt markets to describe trading in debt instruments (bills, bonds, bankers acceptances etc.) with maturities of 12 months or so.
